Quick Summary

The best maternity clothes rental service is Nuuly, according to moms and moms-to-be in the What to Expect community, because of the range of clothes available and the easy-to-use subscription model.

In This Article

When I was pregnant with twins, I attended a formal wedding during the final trimester — and had absolutely no idea how to dress up my considerable baby bump for the occasion. I didn’t want to buy a maternity evening gown that I’d only wear once, but I also didn’t want to go up several sizes in a non-maternity gown because I knew the fit would be off everywhere aside from my bump. (Unless I decided to get it tailored but, again, an unnecessary expense for a dress I’d wear once.) In this situation, a maternity clothes rental service was exactly what was needed.

Sure, not every pregnant person will need to dress up for a black tie wedding, but you will almost inevitably have events that require wearing something a little nicer than maternity leggings. Clothing rental services allow you to, as the name suggests, simply rent clothing to help fill in those temporary gaps in your maternity wardrobe.

Of course, these maternity rental clothes aren’t just limited to dressy occasions. There are tons of services that offer everyday items like jeans, tops, outerwear and more, making them perfect for anyone who wants pregnancy clothes that actually fit them without having to overhaul their closet.

How we chose the best maternity clothes rental services

Although the maternity rental market is growing in popularity, there isn't exactly an overwhelming amount of services to choose between. Given the limited pool of maternity clothing rental services, I considered both options dedicated to maternity wear as well as clothing rental services that offer maternity and non-maternity clothes.

I first looked at each service’s clothing selection. I thought back to my own pregnancy, and which maternity clothes I would have preferred to rent rather than buy; formal dresses, office-appropriate attire and outerwear were top of mind. I prioritized services that offered a variety of bump-friendly options in these categories.

I then considered how the service operated, prioritizing those that provided various subscription plans and were easy to use. (Bonus points went to a service that would pick up the clothes from your house, because no pregnant person wants to wait in line at the post office.)

Why We Love It

Nuuly has all the basic maternity clothes, like cozy sweaters, outerwear and on-trend maternity jeans. And not only do they have plenty of maternity-specific clothes from mom-loved brands like Hatch, Ingrid + Isabel and Emilia George, but they also have a dedicated section for pregnancy-friendly clothes to widen your options.

This versatility served Robin Hilmantel, What to Expect’s Senior Director of Editorial Strategy and Growth, well during her own pregnancy. “I used Nuuly’s rental service before I got pregnant and continued using it for maternity wear until I had my son,” she says. “Although the dedicated maternity clothes offered by the service are a bit limited, I like that you could also search for bump-friendly options that weren’t necessarily made for pregnant women.”

You can choose six items of clothing to rent each month. But if you have an item you can’t part with, like a pair of shockingly comfy jeans or a warm cozy sweater, you can opt to buy it, sometimes up to 75% off the retail price.

To add to the range of maternity clothes and easy subscription service, the customer service is also top-notch, according to Robin. “Once or twice I got an item that wasn’t in great condition, and they credited me with an extra item in my next box to make up for it,” she says.

  • “I love Nuuly! Ive been renting non-maternity clothes for a year +… I just ordered my first shipment with maternity clothes, so I can’t speak to it too much, but I found a pretty good selection with lots of quality brands. Excited for it to arrive!”

  • “Yes! Nuuly is a great option and I've enjoyed my pregnancy rentals so far. The reviews are gold--they really help me determine which size to rent on things. I do wish they had more inventory--it seems a lot of items in my closet aren't available when it comes time for a new rental. Excited to have some event pieces without purchasing!”

  • “I have been using nuuly clothing rental! They have a maternity section and a lot of clothes in general and I find it cheaper to rent 6 items a month than to buy new things! If I buy anything, I try to normal sizes I can wear after baby too.”

Although it’s not actually a rental service, Stitch Fix is a great way to try on maternity clothes in the comfort of your home — and only keep the items that you want. This is especially helpful with maternity pants and jeans that can be tricky to find a perfect fit. To help, Stitch Fix pairs you with a stylist who will send you a curated box of clothes tailored to your needs. You’ll be sent options from mom-to-be-approved brands like Madewell and Ingrid + Isabel, as well as Beyond Yoga for comfortable maternity leggings. It’s a great way to order a variety of jeans and pants at once to see what brands fit you best before making a decision.

  • “Just started StitchFix for some maternity clothes and loving it so far.”

  • “I absolutely hate shopping, but clothes that fit well have been key in feeling good about my changing body. I've ordered two boxes from them and they have been totally on point with cute styles and perfect fit! I've kept every item (which has not usually been the case when I've ordered non-maternity from them). I also feel it's fairly affordable though I know everyone's finances are different (today's box: a sundress, a pair of jean shorts, a pair of jeans, a tank top, and a more dressy top all for $155).”

  • “Just wanted to share that stichfix does maternity and it is AMAZING!”

If you’re anything like me, dresses will play a really large role in your pregnancy wardrobe. They’re easy to throw on, especially as you approach the end of pregnancy, when wiggling in and out of pants becomes a real hassle. If you want to stock up on cute, comfy maternity dresses without investing in these pieces, then La Belle Bump is the perfect rental service for you. You can opt for a one-time rental if you need a dress for a special occasion, sign up for a single month, or enroll in a recurring subscription to keep maternity items coming throughout your pregnancy.

As for the dresses, they include everything from stunning formal dresses (like this sequin and tulle one) to casual comfortable dresses you can throw on for work, brunch or errand-running. What’s even better is that La Belle Bump has plenty of nursing-friendly clothing, so you can keep your subscription even after baby arrives.

  • “La Belle Bump!  You rent and they have fabulous options.  It’s a monthly fee and super reasonable.  I used them for my first pregnancy and am in finance so suit [every] day.  I got more compliments in my maternity wear than I ever did before!  There’s a stylist assigned to you and when you send clothes back you can send feedback on each piece and they’ll send you [what] you want.  I was super impressed.  I’m working from home now on Zoom so haven’t had to worry this go round.  Their Instagram has all sorts of pics to see what kinds of clothes they have.  Good luck!”

FAQs

Each maternity rental service has its own policy, but typically you pay a monthly fee to select a specific number of items to rent each month. The items are then delivered to you, and you have a period of time to wear the clothes before you must return them via mail. Some places will allow you to keep the same item for multiple months and a few even let you buy items at a discount, which is great if you finally found the perfect pair of maternity jeans. Many services also offer one-off rentals, which is helpful if you need an outfit for a wedding, gala or other  special occasion.
