Shopping for maternity clothes can be frustrating for all moms-to-be, but the experience is often particularly difficult for expecting moms who wear plus sizes, which is usually considered size 16 and beyond. “I was shocked at the lack of options for plus-size maternity,” says one What to Expect community mom. “I shed many tears while shopping.”

The good news: Although many retailers still have a long way to go in terms of offering size-inclusive clothing for moms-to-be, the selection has gotten better over the past few years — and continues to improve. Whether you’re looking for maternity dresses, formalwear for a special occasion, or comfy basics like tees and leggings, there are plenty of high-quality plus-size maternity clothes to shop at every price point.

How we chose the best retailers for plus-size maternity clothes

To find the best places to buy plus-size maternity clothes, I compiled a list of 25 popular brands that sell plus-size maternity clothing. From there, I filtered out retailers that didn’t offer sizing up to at least 3XL (or size 24, its rough equivalent); 17 retailers remained. I then reviewed the available clothing selection at these remaining retailers and eliminated six more from consideration because they sold fewer than 15 maternity items in inclusive sizes.

Next, I spoke with three moms: Kat Stroud, a plus-size model and blogger; Jen McLellan, a certified birth educator and founder of the website Plus-Size Birth; and Mia O’Malley, a digital creator who specializes in lifestyle, fashion and parenting. I asked about the maternity brands they liked during their own pregnancies and what made clothing from each of those retailers worth purchasing.

Finally, I turned to moms in the What to Expect community to help me edit the list down further. Through reviews from moms in our community, I learned which retailers moms-to-be like best for plus-size maternity clothing — and why those brands stand out from the crowd. (For example, does a retailer have a generous return policy? Great availability in plus sizes? Quality materials? Especially trendy styles?)

Based on this research, I narrowed down the list to the best places to shop for plus-size maternity clothes that received the highest marks for the following:

  • Price
  • Range of options
  • Size availability
  • Flexible return policy
  • Quality and style

What to Expect community moms agree that popular maternity retailer PinkBlush Maternity is far and away the best option for plus-size maternity clothes. Moms rave about the trendy designs, “quality” fabrics and “super fast” shipping on everything from dresses to basics like tees and tanks to activewear; the site even sells plus-size maternity swimsuits, which can be particularly difficult to find.

“I really loved the prints and garment designs [at PinkBlush],” says Stroud. “They’re more fashion-forward for maternity clothes.”

PinkBlush really stands out for its impressive selection. Unlike many retailers — which very often have a small maternity selection and an even smaller plus-size maternity section — this is a dedicated maternity brand and their plus-size options are extensive. At time of publishing, we saw more than 500 items available in sizes up to 3X.

Though PinkBlush’s prices are reasonable — in the plus-size section, the most expensive items are dresses around $100 — if you don’t need something immediately, you might wait for one of the retailer’s frequent sales (they can sometimes offer up to 30% off).

  • “PinkBlush is great and they usually have a discount code floating around.”

  • “I’m 30 weeks and normally a size 20-22, I ordered from PinkBlush online and their clothes have fit really good.”

Online, Walmart’s selection of plus-size maternity clothes is very good: There were more than 1,000 items available at time of publishing. “Walmart has great budget-friendly options [for] plus-size maternity wear,” says Stroud. In particular, Walmart’s Oh! Mama maternity line is worth a look: The collection includes a mix of basics such as maternity jeans, T-shirts, tanks and denim shorts under $20, and many items go up to size 3XL. The Juebong line also carries maternity styles up to 2X, and is a good choice for plus-size maternity dresses.

Though the site does carry up to size 4X, the options become much more limited above 3X. However, What to Expect community moms note that many Walmart lines tend to run large — so you might be able to size down.

Community Reviews
  • “I had a lot of great finds at Walmart (Walmart’s maternity runs big, I would recommend sizing down if you have any luck).”

  • “Walmart usually has very simple solid colored dresses for super cheap.”

  • “I found some maternity jeans ($30) and T-shirts ($15-20) that go up to at least size 2X at Walmart.”

  • “Walmart has an underrated maternity section for plus size. I'd start there if you want to try stuff on.”

You can find dresses, work-appropriate pants and tops, winter coats and more — many up to size 4X and beyond — in Target’s maternity section. But your best bet here is to look for basics such as leggings, T-shirts and tanks, and sleepwear, What to Expect community moms say.Isabel Maternity by Ingrid & Isabel (up to size 2XL) is a popular line, while Roanan’s (up to size 36) and Ellos (up to 3X) are non-maternity brands that carry great plus-size essentials, many in silhouettes that work for pregnancy. And Target’s own Stars Above line, one of our favorite brands for maternity sweats and pajamas, has comfy loungewear and PJs that go up to 4X.

“Target had a great selection that I was able to shop in person, which was so wonderful because most plus shopping happens online now and not so much a brick and mortar store,” says Stroud.

But if you don’t live near a Target store, the site also has an extensive selection of plus-size maternity options. At time of publishing, there were nearly 900 maternity items available in sizes 3X and 4X, and more than 17,000 when size 2X was added to the filter. And because it’s Target, you know that prices are always going to be affordable (maternity items fall under $160) and you can also rely on the retailer’s excellent return policy: Most sites offer returns within 30 days (some less than that), but Target lets you return purchases within 90 days.

Community Reviews
  • “The Target by me has tons of maternity clothes in stock so that has been great.”

  • “Target has the largest variety when it comes to anything other than just leggings.”

Not only does Yours Clothing have a great range of essentials for low prices, according to Stroud, but it also offers a wide variety of maternity jeans and pants in a variety of silhouettes (straight leg, wide leg, slim fit, and more) as well as leggings in sizes up to 28. Many moms-to-be especially appreciate that the site offers both under-the-belly and over-the-belly maternity jeans which is helpful, as some moms like the comfort and support of over-the-belly styles while others prefer a waistband to sit just below their bump.

Prices at Yours Clothing are also very reasonable. Maternity jeans range from $56 to $69, and the site frequently has sales that are worth taking advantage of. You can also save 10% on your first purchase by signing up for the brand’s free VIP program.

Yours Clothing is not only excellent for jeans; it also offers tons of other maternity clothing, including trend-forward dresses, basics like tees and tanks, and jumpsuits. Even better, the company prides itself on making fashionable clothes that are “fit for curves,” and it’s easy to navigate the website to search by your specific size.

  • “Check out Yours Clothing. Great options for plus-size women.”

  • “There’s a UK site called Yours Clothing that sells plus size maternity clothes. I like them a lot and they’re pretty stocked from what I’ve seen. I feel like they might run big, I ordered my normal size 26 and had to return them for 24’s!”

Why We Love It

You might think of Etsy as primarily a destination for homemade art and home decor. But this popular online marketplace is also an excellent place to shop for plus-size clothes of all kinds, including maternity options, McLellan tells us. “The hunt for adorable plus-size maternity dresses led me to a surprising find: Etsy, a goldmine of size-inclusive clothing options,” she says

Although the site has a wide range of clothing, McLellan notes that Etsy is especially great for maternity formalwear. “You can get custom-sized maternity gowns,” she says. There are truly countless options available in just about every style — find outfits for special occasions, maternity photoshoots and more from the talented designers on Etsy. (If you’re looking for a place to start, McLellan is partial to the Fayetteville, North Carolina-based JandLDesignsboutique Etsy shop.)

The downside is that shopping here involves a little more time and effort on your part. Unlike most of the other retailers on this list, the plus-size maternity options aren’t as well-curated, so you’ll need to use the site’s filtering tools to find the style, size and price range you’re looking for. Returns and exchanges also vary from store to store, so make sure to check the specific policy on the item you’re considering before making a purchase.

A number of What to Expect community moms admitted they were initially a little hesitant to try Stitch Fix, a service where a virtual personal stylist curates outfits based on your preferences. But this brand often delivers “amazing” results, and the stylists “knock it out of the park,” community moms say.

With Stitch Fix’s maternity program, the brand taps maternity-specific stylists to select a box of clothing for your style and pregnancy stage. In fact, Stitch Fix even has special "M.O.M." stylists on hand who are there to help you find the best clothes throughout your pregnancy. You’ll take a quiz first so your stylist can learn more about what kind of clothes you’re looking for. (For example, are you hoping for items that can be worn throughout your pregnancy? Or also work for postpartum and nursing?) You only pay for items from your shipment that you decide to keep, and the $20 stylist fee goes toward the purchase.

Many moms say they appreciate how easy Stitch Fix makes maternity shopping: There’s no need to go into stores and try things on or plan out outfits, and the company works with a huge variety of brands that offer inclusive sizing options. But if you dislike the feeling of not having full control over your shopping experience, Stitch Fix may not be right for you.

Community Reviews
  • “I just joined Stitch Fix because they have maternity clothes and plus-size options.”

  • “I signed up for Stitch Fix since they have maternity and my sizes. They ask your estimated due date to pick items following how far along you are. Got my first box and was very happy!”

Best for Leggings and Loungewear

Storq

Buying Options
Pros
  • High-quality clothing
  • Sizes up to 4XL
  • Stylish basics
Cons
  • Not as affordable as some other options

Price Range: $25 to $250

Clothing Type: Loungewear, Activewear, Basics

Size Availability: Up to 4XL

Why We Love It

Since its launch in 2014, Storq has become hugely popular, and for good reason. Though this site doesn’t carry an enormous selection of maternity wear, the items they do have are perfectly curated and top-notch. “Literally anything from Storq [is great],” says O’Malley. “There's an amazing size range and it’s high quality.”

The Signature Maternity Leggings are incredibly popular — and they’re even our editors’ favorite leggings when it comes to comfort — made of ultra-soft Modal fabric and an extra-large waistband that provides nice bump support. They also offer tons of comfy staples like the Maternity Basics Bundle, which includes four wardrobe staples including a white T-shirt and a black maternity dress, or the 3-Piece Lounge Set that O’Malley recommends, especially for wearing into postpartum. “It’s so worth the money,” she says.

Best yet, nearly everything they sell is available up to a size 4XL — making this one of the more size-inclusive maternity brands on the market.

There are other staples to check out that look polished enough to wear out, but are just as comfortable as your favorite loungewear, like the MVP Jumpsuit and Comfiest Rib T-Shirt Midi Dress

Prices are on the higher end here — leggings are $75, dresses and jumpsuits are around $100 to $150 and the brand’s knits are $220 to $250  — but the site frequently has sales. (Just keep in mind that sale items often can’t be returned.)

How to shop for plus-size maternity clothing

“As a plus size woman, shopping for maternity clothes can be hard,” says Stroud. A major reason for this is availability: A number of retailers offer maternity clothes in inclusive sizing, but the selection at many sites can unfortunately be extremely limited. Here are our best tips for shopping for plus-size maternity clothing:

  • Search by your size: Before you start shopping, it might help to filter out clothing results for your specific size. In my research for this article, for example, I found that quite a few retailers that claim to sell plus-size maternity clothes have very minimal options in size 3X or up.
  • Look at return policy: Once you do land on a retailer with a good selection of clothing in your size, other factors to consider are the site’s return policy (can all items be returned, or just those that were purchased full price?), style (are you looking for classic pieces or trendier items?) and clothing type (some retailers are great for basics like tees and leggings but offer fewer special-occasion dresses).
  • Consider non-maternity clothes: Many moms-to-be also find that they can wear regular plus-size clothes during pregnancy by sizing up. “Plus-size maternity clothes tend to be limited and expensive,” says O’Malley. “I also encourage people to invest in clothing for the postpartum period over the maternity period because that is when you’ll need comfortable and functional clothing that makes you feel good.”
