The Best Video Baby Monitors, According to Parents Who've Tried Them

Best Video Baby Monitors

Although bedtime and naptime can be great opportunities for parents to relax or check things off the to-do list, it can be nerve-wracking to leave your baby alone in another room. Setting up a video baby monitor near your little one’s crib or bed is a great way to feel at ease while doing other things as your baby catches up on her rest.

“A crying baby in the night can unnerve parents, and seeing the child visually completes the story and provides that extra level of safety,” explains Robert Hamilton, M.D., a pediatrician at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

How we chose the best video baby monitors

  • We referenced guidelines from leading experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). In line with recommendations from these groups, all of the products on this list:
    • Offer good range and clarity of view to keep an eye on your baby.
    • Are designed in such a way that they can be installed safely in baby’s room.
  • We spoke to seven moms on the What to Expect team who have nine children between them and have tried several of the products on the list. I’ve also included my own experience with baby monitors, as a mom of two.
  • We canvassed What to Expect’s community boards to learn which video baby monitors parents find most useful and would repurchase. Based on their feedback, we made sure that the products here received positive reviews for:
    • Functionality: If opting for a video baby monitor, you want a high-resolution camera, a high-resolution monitor screen (if the camera has that) and quality audio. Features like night vision, camera pan and tilt are also very important to see your baby clearly.
    • Additional value: Video baby monitors can be expensive, so additional features like pre-installed lullabies, two-way audio and temperature display are appreciated.
    • Reliability: It goes without saying, but a video baby monitor isn’t very useful to you if it’s not working. The best video baby monitors don’t easily develop glitches and aren’t frustrating to operate.

Other factors to consider when buying video baby monitors

  • Ease of use: If the monitor comes with a handheld receiver, it should be easy to quickly turn on to access the video feed.
  • Wi-Fi vs. radio frequency: Some video baby monitors transmit video using a Wi-Fi connection, while others use local radio frequency such as FHSS or DECT. (See more about the differences between each below.)
  • Extra features: Some monitors, particularly those that use Wi-Fi and sync to an app, offer extra features like sleep analytics. Others may offer white noise, lullabies or temperature display. You’ll also come across video baby monitors that track baby's breathing and heart rate, but we don't recommend buying a monitor for these features, since they haven't been proven to help reduce the incidence of SIDS.
  • Safety: The cords on baby monitors can be a safety hazard to children, since they pose a risk of strangulation. Baby monitors (as well as anything with cords) should be installed at least three feet out of your child’s reach. And while a monitor can be a helpful tool, it’s not a substitute for smart sleep practices and parental supervision. The AAP says that you always place your baby to sleep on her back and keep all other objects — including pillows, blankets, bumpers and plush toys — out of the crib. And never rely on your monitor to supervise your baby when she’s awake. The AAP also states that there is no clear research that says that sleep apnea monitors and monitors that track your baby’s breathing will help prevent SIDS. Some monitors on the list below do track baby's breathing and heart rate, but we are recommending them because they are otherwise good products parents can rely on to monitor their babies as they sleep — not for those features specifically.

Do I need a video baby monitor?

The decision about what type of baby monitor to get, as well as whether to get one at all, is very personal. Depending on your family’s situation, video baby monitors may offer more features than you want or need. Some families skip baby monitors entirely, particularly those who live in a small space where they can hear what’s going on in baby’s room very easily, for example. Other families find that a basic audio baby monitor is enough to keep tabs on their child. Video baby monitors tend to be more expensive than audio monitors, so families looking to save money may opt for the latter. Pro tip: Shop your baby monitor during big sales, like Cyber Monday deals.

But if you’re interested in the latest tech gadgets and like the idea of being able to have a visual on your baby while she sleeps, a video baby monitor may be right for you. Some video baby monitors offer additional features that appeal to parents, such as split screen functionality or the ability to track sleep.

Again, it’s critical to remember that while some video monitor brands make big claims about their product’s ability to monitor your baby’s heart rate or breathing, the AAP advises against these monitoring tools, saying there’s no evidence they help decrease SIDS risk. So if you opt for a high-tech video monitor with these kinds of features, never use them as a substitute for direct supervision and safe sleep practices.

What’s the difference between a Wi-Fi and non- Wi-Fi baby monitor?

Video baby monitors can transmit an image in one of two ways, both of which offer benefits.

  • Wi-Fi: With these types of video baby monitors, the camera transmits video through a Wi-Fi connection. Many parents like Wi-Fi video baby monitors because they allow them to check on their child from an app on their phones, which can be more convenient than a handheld camera. These apps also often allow multiple caregivers to access the same camera feed simultaneously. The downside, however, is that you’re reliant on a Wi-Fi connection in order for these types of monitors to function — if service is spotty, video monitoring is affected.
  • Radio frequency: Non- Wi-Fi video baby monitors transmit video through radio frequency such as FHSS or DECT. They come with a camera, which goes in your baby’s room, and a parent unit, which stays with you. Because they don’t rely on the quality of a Wi-Fi connection, some parents feel these types of monitors are more secure and reliable. But they also have some drawbacks, the main one being that you need the handheld receiver in order to see the video stream and can’t access it via an app.

Ultimately, neither option is better or worse, and it really comes down to your family’s preferences and how you intend to use the monitor.

Why We Love It

The Nanit checks off all the baby monitor must-haves and then some. It features two-way audio, a night light with gradual dimming and an upgraded 1080p HD camera equipped with night vision. Parents particularly love the company’s sleep analytics, which you get for free for the first year (after that, subscribe for $5 a month).

“The Nanit Insights that come with the monitor for the first year are legitimately useful,” says Christine Mattheis, What to Expect's Editorial Director. “They help you understand your baby's sleep patterns by logging when the baby wakes up and falls asleep. I used other apps that offered similar analysis, but I had to enter the wake [and] sleep times manually.”

Christine also raves about the the Nanit’s video quality, saying it provides “crystal clear picture that can be viewed from anywhere.” Leah Rocketto, What to Expect’s Associate Commerce Director, echoes Christine’s sentiments, adding that she loved being able to see her daughter when she was home with her husband or a babysitter. Leah also appreciated how easy the Nanit app is to set up and use.

“We have a few different people who watch my daughter, including my tech-challenged mother, so it was nice that getting every one set up was as simple as installing an app and synching the devices one time,” Leah says. She adds that because there is no limit to how many people can connect to the camera, caregivers don’t have to log in and out when someone else is in charge.

The app also offers split screen functionality, a first for a smart monitor. This means you can view two cameras on the same screen at the same time: Ideal for parents of two kids with two Nanit cams, since you can keep an eye on both little ones at once.

I didn’t invest in the Nanit until I had my second baby, and I regret not buying it sooner. It’s been game changing to simply pull up the app to see what’s going on in my sons’ room. I also love that I don’t have to have the app displayed to know what’s going on: I can enable background audio, allowing me to keep an ear out for them while I use other apps. And because the white noise options are so good, it also doubles as a sound machine.

My husband and I are especially addicted to the Nanit app’s video history mode: This lets you scroll back through the video footage to find answers to questions like Why did they both wake up at 3 a.m. last night? and Who woke the other one up first this morning? You can also save past video footage, which has been a surprising perk — we’ve saved many funny moments, such as our boys chatting together before bed, that we would have never known about otherwise.

The Nanit is incredibly travel-friendly for a Wi-Fi monitor. I’ve brought it with me on countless trips — it packs up into a compact travel case, is dual voltage and the flex stand assembles in seconds. (Just keeping in mind that it’s still a Wi-Fi video monitor, so unfortunately the video stream is affected if you’re in an area with unreliable Wi-Fi.)

The Nanit has few faults, but many parents do find it frustrating that the sleep tracking features don’t work if you’re using the flex stand. If the sleep analytics are a big selling point and you don’t think you’d install the over-the-crib wall mount or floor stand, that’s just something to keep in mind.

  • “I have [the Nanit] and love it. It has a great picture, good sound, good alerts. Shows temperature. You can pay a subscription to be able to recall moments, [it] tells you your baby’s average sleep time. There is a separate travel stand you can purchase.”

  • “We love our Nanit! The video is so clear and you can monitor on your phone from anywhere like work, store, etc. and it works clearly. My other monitor can’t leave the house so this helps when I’m out and about and my husband is with LO so I can know when she’s asleep or awake. It also alerts you that there is movement or sound if for some reason you have audio off, which is an option. There’s even a night mode so it goes darker for sleep but you can still see or hear depending on what you choose. But yes, as others say, Wi-Fi needs to be strong enough and I can use cellular if cable goes out! We’ve also noticed temp isn’t accurate.”

  • “We have the Nanit and going on two years we are obsessed with it. Not one single issue ever! Highly recommend.”

Why We Love It

Although it’s not officially marketed as a baby monitor, more and more parents are turning to the super affordable Wyze camera to keep an eye on their babies. The Wi-Fi home cameras have excellent video quality and many of the same features you’d look for in a dedicated baby monitor for a fraction of the price.

Much like the other monitors on this list, Wyze has two-way audio, motion and noise alerts, and an app that can be viewed by multiple caregivers. The color night vision is particularly good, reviewers say. Some parents also appreciate that this monitor is compatible with Alexa and Google Home, so you can use voice assistant and sync it to your other smart home gear. And because it’s so compact and easy to set up, it’s great for travel, too.

Although it’s high-tech, Wyze is definitely a more minimalist camera in terms of features offered. If certain baby-specific features are important to you — think sleep tracking, preloaded lullabies or white noise — this wouldn’t be the best video baby monitor for you. Some reviewers also note that the camera light can be brighter than some baby monitors.

  • “We went with the Wyze camera [for] a few reasons… I didn't like having a separate monitor. It's convenient to use my phone. My husband has downloaded the same app and can view the camera. It's nice because he works hours from home for weeks at a time so he can see what's going on. Super clear picture during day and night. Night vision is amazing!”

  • “We are just using a Wyze cam-super cheap, like $40 I think. Not really a baby monitor, but you can see and hear them and check on them. Our bedroom is right next to the twin’s room and you can hear everything through the walls pretty easily though.”

  • “We’re in a two bedroom and have the Wyze cameras — we use it all the time. It’s just helpful to see if she’s up but not making noise, also it’s helped me learn her sleep cues and how she soothes. I also sleep with earplugs in so if she does cry I can def hear her. Doubles as our nanny cam. The Wyze cameras are so inexpensive and highly competitive.”

Wi-Fi video monitors aren’t ideal for travel, as securing reliable Wi-Fi isn’t always possible. Not to mention, most video baby monitors that do use Wi-Fi won’t work in a hotel room, since those types of connections typically require you to sign in on a website first.

Enter the HelloBaby monitor, a top pick among the What to Expect community that happens to be excellent for travel. This is a small, handheld monitor that has all the features you’d want in a high-tech video baby monitor: night vision, two-way communication, room temperature monitoring, remote pan-tilt-zoom functionality, and the ability to play a selection of lullabies. Reviewers say it’s blissfully easy to set up and use, too.

"The big selling point is definitely the price point — it's on the lower end for video baby monitors, which I definitely appreciate," says Robin Hilmantel, What to Expect's Editorial Director, Special Projects. Aside from the price, Robin greatly appreciates that the handheld monitor's display is nice and big but "not so much so that it would be hard to travel with."

HelloBaby also allows you to add an additional camera, making it a good travel option for those with multiple children. The fact that it’s so well-priced for all of these features, and is particularly affordable for a video monitor, is a great bonus.

HelloBaby doesn’t share their camera resolution and some parents, including Robin, say that the image quality isn’t as crisp compared to some of the pricier monitors on the market. Additionally, Robin says have to click into the menu options to change the volume, which isn't ideal. But all in all, most parents say that they were impressed by the quality of HelloBaby’s monitor, calling it anything but basic.

  • “We have the HelloBaby monitor, no Wi-Fi, there is a camera but it’s more like the audio monitors honestly. I love it. It’s great and not terribly expensive.”

  • “I personally love my HelloBaby video monitor. Pros: SUPER affordable, closed circuit which was a must for me, has a temp reading on the screen, night vision and color when the light is on, a microphone so you can speak to LO, plays lullabies if you want, can zoom in, has a stand so you can prop up the parent monitor, has a plate on the camera which you can mount on the wall, works great in my two-storey house and outside as well. Cons, [the] parent monitor battery doesn't last very long but it does come with a long charger.”

  • “I love my HelloBaby monitor. It’s non-Wi-Fi. You can talk to baby, play lullabies, voice activation so that it only turns on once baby hits a certain decibel level (helps my sleep at night cause I only hear him when he’s actually fussy, not just when he makes a tiny noise as he rolls over). You can even add extra cameras for your other children. Also has a temperature reading.”

Why We Love It

If you’re looking for a video baby monitor that offers high-tech features in a mid-price range, the Eufy SpaceView is an excellent choice.

In terms of features and functionality, the Eufy can compete with the best of them, but at a fraction of the cost. It has night vision, two-way audio, preloaded lullabies, up to 15 hours of battery life and you can connect up to four cameras. Parents say the audio and video quality is very good, and many appreciate the ability to pan and tilt the camera. When your child graduates to a “big-kid” bed — and you want to make sure she’s staying in it — you can switch out the lens to get a wider view of the room.

“I have the Eufy and love it,” says Sarah Darby, What to Expect’s Senior SEO Content Strategist. “I was specifically looking for a closed circuit baby monitor because I am riddled with anxiety and that's why we went with the Eufy. The picture was very clear, the sound was great — I could even hear it over my own sound machine.”

Like Sarah, Jeanne Beacom, Campaign Performance Manager at What to Expect, wanted a non- wi-fi monitor, and appreciated that the Eify was “a self-contained system.”

We didn't think we would need a monitor since we live in a small apartment, but we did get this one once she moved out of our bedroom,” Jeanne says. “The camera does exactly what it needs to do, and I love that the video comes through in color during the day.”

Functionality is far more important than appearance, of course, but for what it’s worth, countless reviews do mention how modern and sleek the Eufy SpaceView is, saying it just feels like a substantial, high-tech monitor — which is especially impressive given its price.

Another pro for the Eufy: It’s great for travel. Olivia DeLong, What to Expect’s Senior Editor, has tried several monitors when traveling and felt the Eufy “had clearer sound and picture, and less connectivity issues.” She adds that it was easy for everyone on the trip — grandparents included — to set up.

Depending on the size of your house and where your baby will be sleeping, something to keep in mind is that the Eufy’s camera range (between 460 to 600 feet) is smaller than some of the other non- Wi-Fi monitors on this list.

  • “I love my Eufy. Been using it for two years already.”

  • “We’ve been using our Eufy Spaceview for 18 months now. It’s been 100 percent reliable. Will continue to use it with #2.”

  • “We just got the Eufy SpaceView set up this weekend. Set up was very easy, just had to plug it in and it did the rest itself. Monitor settings are easy to navigate. The picture quality is really good. Night vision mode is black and white, not green tint like some others. Audio seems good as well although we have not tried out all of the different alert threshold levels yet (there are five). Overall we are happy with our choice so far!”

Why We Love It

If deciding between a Wi-Fi monitor that’s app enabled versus a non- Wi-Fi monitor with a parent unit is making your head spin, you might consider the VTech RM7766HD. This monitor uses Wi-Fi, so multiple caregivers can access the camera via the app, but it also comes with a handheld parent unit if you prefer to use that instead. The result is a video baby monitor that gives you the best of both worlds and tons of flexibility when keeping an eye on your baby.

Camera resolution and range on the VTech RM7766HD are excellent, and the monitor offers all of the features you’d expect in a top video baby monitor — night vision, two-way audio, white noise and lullabies, the ability to monitor temperature and humidity, vertical tilt and horizontal pan — and it’s in the mid-priced range for a video monitor. Reviewers also like how easy the monitor is to set up and that the parent unit has great battery life.

Just keep in mind that although there are some sleep insights on the app, they don’t compare to those offered by the Nanit or Miku. So if you’re after those kinds of analytics, this may not be the best video baby monitor for you.

  • “I swear by VTech! I’m still using my son’s and he is 3.5 years old and we just bought a new one for this babe and we love how clear it is and how far the connection reaches!”

  • “The VTech [monitor] is so cool. It comes with a screen monitor with very clear imaging. You can also connect it to your phone. When it detects/movement, sound (baby grunting or stretching) it will let you know. It also lets you know the temperature in the room that the camera can detect and you can add music, white noise and a night light. Through the monitor we noticed that the room was a little hot so we turned off the heater. Would have not known that without the monitor. Very impressive. We tried it out tonight right after we got home from Target and we felt so at peace watching him sleep while also watching a movie. Would definitely recommend.”

  • “I found it very overwhelming to find a baby monitor with good reviews but we got the Vtech and it has been amazing.”

Why We Love It

What to Expect community members with two or more kids overwhelmingly recommend the Vava. The brand’s split screen model comes with two cameras that can either be set up in the same room (if multiple children are sleeping in different corners or you want two angles of your baby’s crib, for example) or in different rooms. But the Vava also has the ability to sync up to four cameras — so while it is an initial investment, if you think you’re going to have more than two kids, you can continue using this same monitor for many years to come.

Once you’ve installed both cameras, they appear on the split screen simultaneously with 24/7 audio and automatic night mode. Parents appreciate the camera’s zoom function and full-angle mobility, which is particularly useful once you have a toddler who might be inclined to roam her room at night. It runs on a battery that should last up to one full day, ideal if you want to take the camera with you anywhere in the house without worrying about monitors (it has a range up to around 900 feet). You can also opt to use it in audio-only mode if you’re in a situation where you need to extend the battery life.

Downsides? There’s no app, if that’s a feature that’s important to you. Compared to some other video monitors on the market, some parents also say that the camera stand is a little less sturdy. But overall, reviewers rave about the sleek look and feel of this monitor.

  • “We really love the Vava for two kids! We had [another monitor] for my son but the battery wasn’t holding a charge and it kept disconnecting. I had my second baby and decided on the Vava. It has been awesome! I love that it has a split screen, can focus on just one room or continuously switch between two rooms. Battery life is excellent, never disconnects and picture quality is fantastic. Honestly, nothing I hate about it.”

  • “We got the Vava baby monitor (which was a recommendation). Really great video and audio quality, very simple to use and doesn’t rely on the house Wi-Fi, the monitor connects directly to the camera.”

  • “I second the Vava! You can also connect a second camera to the monitor if you have another. Great picture quality and 360 view. Decent range on it too.”
