I have extremely fair and sensitive skin, so it’s crucial that my sunscreen is powerful enough to protect my skin but gentle enough to be used daily. And after wasting hundreds of dollars trying different sunscreens, I found the perfect one in an Ulta sample of Supergoop Mineral Mattescreen. The lesson: Never turn down a free sample

Supergoop is one of the most popular pregnancy-safe sunscreens, especially among What to Expect moms because of the mineral formula that’s free from harsh chemicals. (The brand is so popular that it even scored a What to Expect Pregnancy-Safe Beauty Award for Best Sunscreen last year.) But what makes Supergoop’s Mineral Mattescreen a must-use is the impressively smooth application; I was amazed by the airy, satin-like texture, and even more impressed that it didn’t leave behind a white cast like many other mineral sunscreens.

Even though I’ve only been using Supergoop’s Mineral Mattescreen for six months, it has quickly become a part of my daily beauty routine. But at $40 it’s a bit of a splurge, especially for sunscreen. So if you’re considering using it, especially during your pregnancy, here are my honest thoughts.

It has a light tint that's great for everyday use.

What makes the Supergoop Mineral Mattescreen stand out is that it has a light tint that negates any white cast. This may have to do with the already pale nature of my skin, but this light tint is the main reason I always keep this sunscreen on hand over other mineral-based options. For instance, I have a ton of freckles, and I appreciate that the tint of the Mattescreen doesn’t cover my freckles entirely but instead softens them. And while I don’t clinically have rosacea, my face is extremely prone to redness. The Mattescreen helps take some of that away, reducing the pinkness I get between my nose and cheeks.

(Although I can only speak to wearing Supergoop on fair skin, the brand says that the “neutral” tint should counter the white cast on most skin tones.)

It’s water- and sweat-resistant for busy days outside.

Another reason why I always carry a mini size of the Supergoop sunscreen in my bag is that it’s water-resistant, perfect for long days outdoors. Even if I’m sweating on the sidelines of my kid’s soccer game or getting splashed at the splash pad during an impromptu park trip, it doesn’t wash off, so I know that my skin is still protected. And, because the formula is absorbed quickly, I don’t mind reapplying it later on in the day. Plus, I love the luxurious satin-like feel it has when I rub it in.

It covers — but doesn’t clog — pores.

Many people may worry about sunscreens clogging their pores, but Supergoop’s Mattescreen — and all Supergoop sunscreens — is formulated to be non-comedogenic. In fact, when I started using the sunscreen, I found the sunscreen actually minimized the look of my pores. For a while, I actually used this as a primer underneath my makeup, to provide both SPF protection and minimize the appearance of my pores.

It’s ideal for sensitive skin and a variety of skin types.

I have found that the Mattescreen is ideal for my sensitive and combination skin. I’ve been using it for six months without any issues, and find that I get a subtle glow and some sheen in the right spots — almost like a highlighter on my cheekbones and forehead — without looking oily. The finish isn’t glossy, but incredibly smooth and gives my face a fresh, just-cleaned look.

And although I’m not prone to acne, the main SPF ingredient, zinc, is actually a natural anti-inflammatory to help calm breakouts, Jessica Wu, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist said in a previous interview with What to Expect

So, is Supergoop Mineral Mattescreen worth it?

Overall, I highly recommend this mineral sunscreen, especially if you’re looking for a pregnancy-safe sunscreen. The practically weightless matte sunscreen is free from harsh chemicals but still keeps your skin protected — and without leaving a white cast behind.
